Sushi Anyone?

I was over the top excited to hear that a sushi bar was opening in Kalamata! In fact, so excited that I called Iliana and insisted that we go on opening night. We arrived at Casa Grande to find that the owners had taken over  the second floor of a Neo Classical building and beautifully designed the interior and exterior by mixing rustic with modern materials. The atmosphere was literally "bumping!" The place was packed with people, the music was lively and fit the scene. The sushi chef was chopping away as the drinks were pouring from every angle of the bar.

After waiting quite some time and after asking several servers, we finally received a menu. We were understanding since the place was packed and it was opening night. However, when looking at the menu, we didn't understand how it was possible for a California Roll to cost 11 euros!! Yikes! The prices for the rolls were out of this world, seriously! Not even in Athens let alone London does one pay 11 euros for a California Roll or 7.50 euros for a salmon roll.

We were disappointed to come to terms with the fact that this was not a sushi place that we would just pop into for lunch and dinner on a regular basis... Out of curiosity and for the blog's sake we ordered the sushi combo that was served with approximately 17 pieces of a mix of sushi and rolls. the food arrived in a timely fashion, considering how busy the place was. It was obvious though that the server had never served sushi before and did not know that it is proper etiquette to bring soy sauce to the table. When we asked for the soy sauce, it was confirmed how unfamiliar with the whole concept the server was since he brought one small round dish for us to share the soy sauce rather than one for each.

The food itself was really quite tasty. I can't say I felt we got "bang for our buck" but the flavours didn't disappoint. Casa Grande is definitely a cool, trendy and fun place to go for drinks and if you are keen on overpriced sushi, at least you'll know that it tastes good. We recommend a visit for a cocktail or a glass of wine because the interior design and the atmosphere are worth experiencing. We'll be sure to give Casa Grande another try on a not so busy night.

AMAN!

Not Afuera, but Adelante!

Adelante is a fairly new restaurant for Kalamata and quite a unique one. It reminds me a lot of the type of trendy restaurants that I would visit back home in Canada. The design and decor inside and outside the restaurant are exceptional and give off a European vibe. It's obvious that a lot of effort went into creating the warm, perhaps you could say swanky atmosphere. The music is very pleasing and at the perfect volume so that it drowns out the neighbouring tables' conversations but allows you to hear those at your own table.

Deciding on what to eat was tough. Not because everything looked delicious and we couldn't decide but because the menu was such a mess of different cultural cuisines, many of which didn't compliment each other. I was keen to order the spring rolls but had nothing to properly combine them with since the other options were a mix of Mexican burritos and quesadillas, Spanish patatas bravas or totally Western burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches and wraps. Their main courses were a variety of different pastas which you could say fit the Italian description. We managed to piece together three different items off the menu that we felt would work best together without mixing up our palettes and our stomachs.

We ordered the Messinian Delight salad, the mini tarts and the patatas bravas. All three dishes were unique and very flavourful. The mini tarts were quite original and definitely left us wanting more. We were also very impressed with their patatas bravas as they were the closest we have tried to Spain's original. The tasty food made up for the confusing menu. We both saw items on the menu that we would like to go back and try like the Portobello mushroom wrap and potentially a burger.

The ambiance and the flavours made Adelante very much worth another visit, if not for food then definitely for a glass of wine. I advise perhaps ordering a main course and one appetizer rather than an assortment of different appetizers to share. Although we didn't get a chance to try the desserts, they had a very good selection on the menu. The fact that Adelante is located right in the central square of Kalamata, it makes it very easily accessible. Finally, the service was great! The server was very friendly, knowledgable of the menu and simply delightful. Adelante means, "come in" and we'll be sure to go back in again...

Stolidi Ena, το ένα και μοναδικό!

"Stolidi Ena" in Kalamata's city centre is simply irresistible. The cafe is located in a Neo Classical aristocratic home formerly owned by a doctor and currently inherited by his grandson (or so we're told the story goes...). The home is beautifully kept inside and out and is very inviting. As soon as we arrived, we had the sense that we had to take our shoes off because we were entering someone's very nice and clean house!

This cafe is truly amazing and hard to describe in words, you simply must see it. It is a marvellous place to go enjoy your coffee, your lunch, or a glass of wine served with something to nibble on. It's especially neat in the spring and summer period with its backyard terrace full of trees and beautiful flowers. It's like having your meal inside "the secret garden".

We ordered two different types of Greek herbal teas. Not only were the teas tasty and soothing but the experience was quite nice since they were served in pretty porcelain tea cups. Chrissa made up her mind for a chocolate cake (which the server explained was one of their specials) and I decided to have a savoury snack, thus ordered the chicken pie. I'm almost embarrassed to admit how quickly we cleaned our plates and furthermore, how I also picked away at the chocolate cake!

After such a delightful experience at Stolidi Ena I definitely recommend. The atmosphere is really enjoyable and each room in the house is unique. You may find it difficult to decide where to sit because not only will you have the dilemma of whether sit in or outdoors but if you choose to sit inside, you will not know which of the perfectly decorated rooms to pick. This is definitely one of Kalamata's hidden treasures and worth a visit.

Mangiamo a Da Francesco!

Da Francesco is considered one of the high-end restaurants in Kalamata and is Italian in every way possible. Not only are the pizzas and pasta traditionally homemade but there are hints of the Italian language periodically sounding from the kitchen. To the Da Francesco staff, cooking is an art. The mushrooms are foraged from the local mountains by the owner himself and we were lucky enough to witness him olive tasting a few tables down from us. The server's eyes would even light up when she explained the foraging, cooking and execution of some of the dishes. There were so many delicious options on the menu that we couldn't chose, so as an exception, the server offered to recreate the portions of the pasta dishes so that we could sample a variety.

Regardless, we ordered way too much food for two people but we absolutely couldn't resist. We decided to go big or go home! The evening started with two different salads, their mixed greens and the tomato and mozzarella salad, and a bowl of their mushroom soup of the day. The next round was a mushroom and saffron dish with freshly foraged mushrooms that they called "little roosters". The entrees followed with  three pasta plates, ravioli with tomato sauce, risotto with wild asparagus and wild mushrooms and finally, half twisted pasta with tuna. I almost forgot to mention the thin crust Prociutto and rocket lettuce pizza that arrived along with the pastas. Every dish was unique in its flavours and paired very well with the house white wine that was served.

Although we were stuffed to the brim after eating almost all of the food on the table, (seriously, very little food was packed to take home) the restaurant was kind enough to treat us to every single one of their desserts! We couldn't object because they didn't ask. They simply brought the desserts to us. The semi freddo chocolate mousse was my personal favourite. Iliana really liked their panna cotta with homemade strawberry syrup.

Overall, we had a great dining experience. We ate way too much and needed club soda to aid our digestion but we left with our tummies satisfied. Da Francesco is located at the Marina of Kalamata and is a great date restaurant for romantic couples. And if I am not convincing enough, they had the champions league football game playing on mute at one end of the restaurant. A smart way to keep both the ladies and gents satisfied without taking away from the ambience of the restaurant. Gracie! Tutto era molto delizioso!

Πάμε Κούνιες;

Sunday Brunch

There are few places one can go in Kalamata for Sunday brunch. One of our favourites, and the one we chose to visit today, is Athanasiou by the Kalamata Port. The Athanasiou chain of pastry shops and cafes has a long history. The original Athanasiou was established in 1938 and since then, the family has expanded their brand not only in Kalamata but as far as Boston and Panama. It began solely as a pastry shop and now caters to coffee, brunch, lunch, dinner and dessert.

One of the many reasons we like to visit this specific Athanasiou location is the view. The shop has a balcony that overlooks the port right along Navarinou Street, and on sunny days it is breathtaking. Today we decided to sample their omelettes off the brunch menu. In the past I have ordered the eggs benedict but for those looking for real hollandaise sauce, this is not the place for you as their version of hollandaise sauce is a homemade mayonnaise variation. I personally was not too impressed. The omelettes, on the contrary, are delightful.  Today we sampled the egg white omelette with spinach, herbs and light goat cheese, as well as the omelette with prosciutto and Provolone cheese. Unfortunately, they were out of Provolone and we had to replace it with Greek Manouri cheese which was delicious nonetheless. We also ordered two Americanos to accompany our brunch.

The food tasted great and definitely met our expectations. We do, however, have some tips for you. We recommend that you ask for whole wheat bread with your brunch because their whole grain toast is quite good. Also, if you ask for some marmalade with your bread they give it to you free of charge and it is absolutely worth it! It is homemade and they have an assortment of flavours depending on the seasonal fruit. My personal favourite is the apricot but I would love to try the fig jam one day. I have to admit, the service is inconsistent and can be quite slow. The staff is always quick to fix mistakes that they make on their orders and are very friendly so just be patient and enjoy the view as you wait.

Athanasiou by the port has been, and will continue to be one of our favourite brunch spots. If you want to learn more about the Athanasiou brand, please follow the link below. We will be sure to visit some of their other locations and report back here at the Eatery Kalamata.
