Barba Giannis

We have found another great place to dine in Kalamata! Barba Giannis is located near the former train station and neighbours the pedestrian street Iatropoulou which is full of cafes. The restaurant/grill occupies the corners of two buildings as well as the pedestrian street in bettween. Although there is a lot of seating, we recommend you get there early if you want to sit outdoors because this place is quite popular. The decorations in the space across the street from the original corner are very warm and welcoming.

We were pleasantly surprised while looking at the menu at the food selection. It was hard to decide because everything looked really good. After giving it much thought, we ordered the Barba Gianni salad, the spinach rice, the grilled vegetables and the traditional spaghetti from Mani served with two fried eggs and Mitzithra cheese. Of course, we also ordered half a litre of house white wine. The server was super friendly and he brought the food out in a timely manner. Everything tasted really good and we kept picking off each others plates. We were particularly excited about the spaghetti from Mani and the way in which they had prepared the cheese.

The overall experience was excellent. We not only plan to go back but will become regulars there. It seems like the traditional pulled pork is an item to try seeing as it disappeared quite early on in the night.  It must be good! Furthermore, while walking by on other nights, we have noticed that a group of friends gather and play Rebetika music on their bouzoukia. We hope to co-encide with these musicians during our next dinner at Barba Gianni.
