Platanos - Kalamata style Pork is the specialty

Platanos (Πλάτανος) is a well established restaurant/ouzeri in Kalamata. It's the place to go for ouzo and small dishes for sharing. It's also the place to go if you are craving traditional Pulled Pork! The interior of the establishment definitely has character that dates back to our grandparents' days. The walls are lined with old comic style advertisements for Greek products that are fun to look at. Although old in its appearance, the place is very warm and welcoming. On sunny days, the option to sit outside is available if you don't mind the noise from the traffic on the main street.

We were lucky enough to have company during our lunch today so we got to sample many different dishes. It's always nice to know that there are others willing to help us eat! We ordered several different dishes to accompany our beer and wine. First came the homemade dolmathes, the fava (we asked for no onions), the wild greens pie (xortopita) and the pulled pork served on top of roast potatoes. This followed with spicy baked feta cheese in foil and wild asparagus served with tomatoes and melted cheese. From all the dishes we tried we were very satisfied with all except for one. The asparagus dish was quite disappointing since the flavours didn't compliment each other. The dolmathes and pulled pork, on the other hand, were excellent!

The service at Platanos was friendly but, unfortunately slow. We really enjoyed most of the food and the atmosphere but cannot say that the experience here was the best. We most certainly recommend it for the pork and the delicious roast potatoes. We'll be back, that's for sure!
