Loukoumades at Astoria...mmmmm!

We are nearing the Easter holiday and during this time it's always nice to share sweets with our friends and relatives. Iliana and I cured our sweet tooth early at Astoria Confectionary (Αστόρια Ζαχαροπλαστείο) in Kalamata. Our friends informed us that Astoria is the place to go if you are craving loukoumades, amongst other desserts, and we followed their advice. The shop is located in the historic centre and its tables spill out onto Platia Othonos where one can sit and enjoy some coffee and dessert in the open air.

Since we were recommended the loukoumades, we asked for two orders and we did not regret it one bit! They were excellent, delightfully crispy on the outside and perfectly honey soaked on the inside. They weren't overwhelmingly sweet which was how we managed to finish every last one. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the family that owned the establishment was very friendly. For this reason, Iliana and I spent our evening conversing, relaxing and savouring every last bite of our loukoumades.

Currently Astoria has an assortment of traditional Easter treats such as decorated candles, Easter koulourakia and giant chocolate eggs. Their displays of desserts also look very appealing and fresh. Next time we'll have to be more adventurous and try some of their other delights but...it's so hard to say no to the loukoumades!
