Alaloum in Nafplio

We visited the historic city of Nafplio back in the spring and couldn't help but blog about a must visit restaurant. We went during a busy weekend and it was quite hard to find a place to lunch as every restaurant/tavern was full. We noticed one place, however, that had the quickest turnover we have ever witnessed and since we had previously heard good reviews, we decided to wait the line. The restaurant had a descent amount of seating outside, inside and on the indoor balcony area. The interior had a more rustic feel but that was not what attracted us to Alaloum. It was food we were after!

Although the menu had a good selection, we ordered main courses from their daily specials. To start we chose the Alaloum salad and a plate of Fava and for mains the rooster with the traditional Greek pasta and the stewed beef with mashed potato. Our lunches were served in a flash which clearly indicated that everything was pre-made. The salad was one to brag about in taste and size! The main dishes were also good, nothing out of the ordinary but good.

It was clear as to why the turnover was so quick at Alaloum. The food was for the most part pre-cooked and the servers were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. It was so worth the experience though. 'Twas exciting! We recommend this place because the food is good with generous portions and you most likely won't have to wait. However, if it's a quiet meal you are after, this may not be your best option.

Street Pasta

In the heart of Kalamata's historic centre there are a lot of different options for dining out. One of these options is Street Pasta, a small pasta place with an artistic touch in its interior design and its dishes. The place is quite small, so indoor seating is limited but cozy. We sat in the back of the pasta place and the wall of rock concert tickets, of which the owner had personally attended, caught our eye as a cool personal touch.

The menu had an array of pasta dishes as well as salads and appetizers. It was quite late so we decided to keep it simple with a pasta dish each and a glass of wine to pair. The server was kind and easily swapped linguini with the penne noodles in the mushroom pasta dish that we asked for. We also ordered the "Greek" pasta that had olives, veggies and chunks of cheese. The server asked if we would like it at all spicy and we said mild if possible.

Our dinner arrived quite quickly and it was neat to watch the chef working on our food as this establishment has an open kitchen. The mushroom dish was excellent but we were a bit disappointed in the "Greek" dish because it was overwhelmingly spicy. It was a good thing that we only ordered two dishes because the pasta was quite hearty and we left feeling stuffed.

Overall Street Pasta has made a good effort to create a different pasta concept. The place is trendy, the staff is friendly but the food, at least this time around, was nothing to brag about. That being said, there was a huge selection of pasta on the menu so we will be back again for round two.

Chop Suey

Leonidas - A Meat Lovers' Dream

If you love meat, hunting, wild game and all else related, this is the place for you. This very unique and extremely traditional tavern is located in the village of Ariochori about a 20 minute drive outside of Kalamata. Do not be afraid when you walk in and see your dinner hanging from the ceiling hooks and the hunting tools used throughout the ages hanging from the walls, simply embrace it. That being said, the atmosphere is quite warm and welcoming as the dining room tables are set by the fireplace of this traditional stone building.

Now let us share with you how you go about ordering in this tavern. As expected, there were no menus. Someone will come take your first order which includes anything but the meats. We ordered the traditional fried potatoes, their mixed cabbage and greens salad, feta and wine. Then the so-called "Mother" or in Greek "Mana" comes to your table and takes your meat order. You need not ask what is available, you need only look at what's hanging from the ceiling hooks. Also, you will recognize "Mana" when you see the stern look on his face and his brilliant moustache. We pointed to the lamb chops and he nodded, thus our order had been placed.

"Mana" then walked over to our meat, took it off the ceiling hook and with a machete knife began to chop the lamb on a tree stump used as a cutting board. The food was then prepared in the back kitchen and served.

It was absolutely delicious! Probably the best lamb chops we have ever tasted. From what we were told, the meats are fresh off Leonidas' local farms. His daily catch is what's hanging from the ceiling hooks. Following our dinner, we were treated to some Greek yogurt with wild cherry topping.

And so there you have it, an experience all meat lovers should experience. To find the place, simply drive to the village Ariochori and ask for Leonidas. The locals will direct you!

Baba Yaga, has Style

We decided to wait a few weeks after their grand opening before experiencing Baba Yaga, in order to give the new restaurant/cafe-bar a chance to perfect their operation. Walking into the establishment we were enthused and impressed with the amount of work that has gone into the interior decorating. The fine details of vintage and modern design really please the eye and create an atmosphere that simply makes you feel good. One more detail that we noticed and were very impressed with was how conservatively the staff were dressed, the opposite of what you find in bars and restaurants these days.

Now for the good part, the food! We arrived early, before lunch, thus ordered a cup of coffee and a cup of tea to sip on until it was time to eat. Meanwhile, we examined the menu and decided on four items to try. From the salads we picked the lentil salad, as an appetizer we ordered the fried eggs with slivers of potato and as our main courses we had the classic burger and the seafood 'manestra'.

The main courses were both excellent and the appetizer, although more suited for salt lovers, was pleasantly interesting in its presentation. Furthermore, for those who love garlic, a lot of it, the lentil salad is for you. Again, another detail that caught our eye was the beautiful selection of china they use to serve the coffees and the food.

We really enjoyed our time at Baba Yaga and the friendly service made the difference. The food is gourmet and the prices reflect that style of food, but regardless, they are approachable. One of the aspects of Baba Yaga that we really like is that one can come here and enjoy the ambiance at any time of day since the place offers everything from coffees, brunch, lunch and dinner to wine and cocktails for the night crowd.
