The answer it Mexi-CAN at Taqueria el Mestizo, the new Mexican restaurant-bar that recently opened its doors to the foodies of Kalamata. Everything about this restaurant is Mexican, from the music, the traditional food and the kitchen staff to the bright colours, the cactuses and the tequila lined bar. If you haven't tried Mexican before, we can give you some pointers on what to order and you can find it here...but first, we must tell you all about our experience...
As mentioned above, we were intrigued at how well the place was decorated and how authentic it looked. We were also keen to explore the menu. There was a good variety of common Mexican dishes such as guacamole, nachos, burritos, tacos and enchiladas. Between the two of us, we chose to share an order of guacamole (an avocado dip served with nacho chips), Iliana asked for the chicken quesadillas (pita style wraps filled with melted cheese and chicken) and I decided on the Mexican salad. The food was served warm and in a timely fashion from the friendly server. All the dishes met our expectations. Iliana's quesadillas were served with beans, Mexican rice and a small green salad that proved to be comfortably filling. My personal favourite was the guacamole as it is a dish that I have very much missed after having moved to Kalamata and I am pleased to know that I can find it here.
I must admit, this was not the first time that we visited La Taqueria el Mestizo. From our first visit I tried the burrito and Iliana the tacos. Those dishes clearly pleased our taste buds and thus were the reason that we came back for round two. When visiting El Mestizo be sure to explore some of the Mexican beverages such as the spicy beer spiked with tequila, the selection of Mexican beers and the cocktail blends created in house.
The owner treated us to an after dinner digestif of Jagermeister and mentioned that the kitchen staff is in the process of expanding the menu further with more authentic Mexican dishes. Our only Mexican restaurant in Kalamata is off to a good start and we look forward to sampling the new additions to the menu in the near future. Viva Mexico en Kalamata!
